Telegram account banned, limited or frozen? How to check, appeal and avoid losing it
"Banned" on Telegram can mean several things, and they are not equally bad. Work out which one you have.
Three common situations
Limited to mutual contacts. You can log in and read groups, but messages to people who haven't saved your number don't go through and adding people to groups fails. This is the most common case, usually after a few spam reports.
Frozen. The app tells you the account is frozen. Most features stop working, but you can still log in and appeal.
Banned or deleted. At login you're told the number is banned, or the account is simply gone.
How to check your status
Search for Telegram's official bot @SpamBot and press Start. It tells you whether the account is limited and until when.
- "Good news, no limits are currently applied" means you're fine
- If it shows an end date, the limit lifts automatically then
- If there's no end date, follow its prompts to appeal
Keep the appeal short and plain: this is a personal account used normally, you don't send ads. Don't paste a wall of text and don't appeal over and over.
Why accounts get limited
- Messaging lots of strangers right after registering or logging in
- Sending the same message to many people, or messages with links
- Joining many groups or adding many people in a short time
- Using unofficial bulk messaging or scraping tools
Read-only for the first few days, then join a handful of groups and chat normally. That alone avoids most limits.
Can I get the account back?
Telegram logs you in with a code sent to the phone number. There's no "forgot password" route. So:
- Still have the number? Log in again on any device
- Number gone and no device still logged in? Recovery is basically impossible
- Inactive for too long (6 months by default, adjustable in privacy settings)? The account is deleted automatically
Do these two things after you get an account
Set a 2-step verification password. Settings, Privacy and Security, Two-Step Verification. Without this password nobody can log in even with the SMS code. If a purchased account already has one, the product description says so; change it to your own after logging in.
Add a login email. Newer versions let you receive login codes by email. For a purchased account this matters a lot, because you don't hold the original phone number.
Also keep at least one device logged in at all times. Don't tap "Log out" casually. Logging back in may require a code you can no longer receive.
What to check before buying
Look at the delivery format. Some accounts come as phone number plus code, others as session or tdata files you import into the desktop client. Each logs in differently, and the product description explains which one you get. If you are not sure, buy one first and ask support if anything goes wrong.
